Hello and welcome to part 19 of my blog and to start it is another sunny day but things seemingly are about to get worse with heavy rain and thunder forecast just in time for me and Helen to go away for a couple of days for her Birthday what a bugger that is but we shall make the best of it as we always do, we’re hoping forecast is wrong mmmm but no i have a feeling we may need water proofs. Today started the way yesterday finished with a ten mile cycle on the MTB which was ok but stayed near to home so was a bit busier with dog walkers and people out jogging which was fine, i was going to make it the road bike but hopefully will get out Friday when we get back weather permitting. Still here are some photos from today.
1984 was a year of changes for me i had played for a lot of teams amateur football one of the teams Thistlebank who was mainly mates and brothers who usually were beat every wknd but we always had enough players and will go into this bit later, when i parted ways with Thistle i thought that was it for me football wise but i had heard that a team called Dundee Hibs who had school friends and friends i grew up with as well but maybe never saw so much, Martin Hart asked if I’d like to go along and have a trial so i did and got to say although i was not best player it was a good time and i had many amazing times with them and some great night outs, they all drank in a bar called the Plough or as it is better known Frews as it was owned by Wullie Frew a legend when it comes to bars and just a nice guy, there was a girl who worked behind the bar and her name was Helen.
Dundee Hibs me sitting far left
I remember going to Frews for the first time it was after my first game for the team and if I remember rightly i had a good game and was asked by the lads to go to Frews as they all met there at nine at night every Sunday as. Frews as you can see from the keepers top sponsored the team, these were good nights we had a bit of a quiz but mainly was just a group of guys out for a bevvy and it was better of course if you had won. But yes it was the first time that i laid eyes on Helen and although things are a bit blurry we seemed to chat a lot and she always well maybe not always but she had this denim skirt was short whoop whoop 😂 but lets just say she looked great. At this time Dundee United were one of the biggest teams in Europe and we had a game coming up against Manchester United down there so we decided to hire a bus to take us down to the match by this time we both knew each other mmmm wellish but either the day before the match Helen said that she would come to which my answer was well you can sit on my knee and even though she never went from what i remember she came from behind the bar and sat on my knee and said that she will see me when i get back and I’m sure we had a kiss. Well it was good luck as we drew with Manchester United and when i got back well maybe not the same day me and Helen started to see each other which i shall talk about some more this week and of course a bit about football days.

Well Wednesday 28th and we are in Kinross for Helens birthday staying at the green Hotel which is ok we have been given a big room wit a four poster bed and it is clean mmm well apart from the shower head which i had to ask to be cleaned, it is very much faded grandeur but is up for sale so i hope if it does sell it will have money spent on it as it does need it, but it is busy and we are eating here tonight so fingers crossed it is ok as well it is Helens birthday and she deserves a good day.
So yeah the drive up was fine although we were worried as during the night we had big thunder and lightning 🌩 and heavy rain 🌧 and before we left Dundee it was heavy rain again but it never lasted and it has been an ok day here very warm and clammy again. We had a walk round but not much to see but it is bigger than i thought and looks to have a good couple of bars but tonight i shall have a drink in Jocks bar here at the Hotel.
I’m sure there is more here to see and it looks a nice place. Tomorrow were heading to Loch Leven Ladder for a walk hopefully if weather stays good but if not we shall visit few places in the car. Helen was given lots of presents and at this moment is having a lie down she has not had the best of weeks but hopefully feeling better and she can really enjoy her night with some nice food and some fizz as well. WiFi here for some reason is struggling to connect with iPad and iPhone but it connected to Helens no problem bit bizarre. I shall hope have time to tell you bit more about things from the past later was hoping to do it today but running bit late and it is shower time and beer n scran time yup.

Well good morning looks a bit cloudy today but still warm, last nights meal was good i had Cullen Skink as a starter Helen had some scotch broth, then steak, chips, onion rings with peppercorn sauce and it was lovely really fresh, Helen had sea bass and dessert was a creme brûlée which we shared and was nice this was washed down with a bottle of fizz mmm well i had a couple of beers as well.
Bellhaven best nice pint but my second pint did not taste or smell right so i took it back and the guy agreed so ended up with a lager, so all in all not a bad day/night for Helens birthday. Today we are going to loch leven for wee walk if rain stays off and see what else we can do, might even go to go outdoors shop in Edinburgh if we have time as needing new boots.
So spoke to Helen about first date we had and we went to a bar called the old bank bar and i seem to remember this as her sister and her partner were there John and Joyce and although they split up a while ago i still see John a good mate and of course Joyce, i always thought i met them in frews as i seem to remember speaking to them there but not the other bar anyway that’s beside the point they must have liked me as we still all talk 😂. Helen worked for. Dundee city council but she worked part time in frews as she had her own apartment in sibbald st which will talk about later as that is a story in itself but it served its purpose for us both and we have come a long way. But frews was to become my second home as i was still living with mum in Douglas at this time, the first time Helen met mum was fun as i told her to try not take the lords name in vein or swear ha ha well she was doing great until my mate decided to knock very loudly on the door which made mums dog jump up and start barking Helen who jumped with fright then shouted OH JESUS CHRIST WHAT A BLOODY FLEG boom there it was and i can tell you the look on mums face ha ha yes mum burst out laughing as well as us all, i remember her saying later that she was wondering how long Helen would hold out 😂 Steven Gudmunsen to this day i don’t know what happened
Myself and Helen at queens view
Well today was good we drove to Loch Leven Ladder had look at the shop there and bit of a walk then to the nature reserve and had walk there as well i shall add photos later as WiFi here is not the best then we drove up by the path of Condie and managed to see a work colleague and friends Glamping pod this has had great reviews and I’m not surprised as where it situated the views are stunning 😍 sorry picture is a bit out of focus.
I have not stayed there as Helen likes her luxury’s and quite right blut i would love to stay for a night but i will have to be quick as unfortunately Laura is planning to move back to Stornaway and they are taking pod with them, pity as I’ve worked with her for long time and met her husband jarred and a really nice couple and enjoy working with her as it’s always a bit of a laugh but of course i wish them all the best it is a big move as they also have 3 kid's but i have been to Stornaway and it is beautiful so I’m sure it will all go well.
Ok tonight we are going to eat in the bar here at the garden hotel i am currently doing this blog sitting having a beer after as i say it has been a good day also weather wise, we both feared it was going to rain for the two days but it has been nice and i would come back again as the hotel is fine and the staff are very friendly as well. We head home tomorrow but really if i had chance i would have another night away. I leave you with some phone photos from walk i did.

Well time to go home and its a wet start as the rain is on, dinner yesterday here was again very nice had a cheese burger with bacon and chips and Helen had mini burger both very fresh and very well cooked as well.
So back home now and unpacked and just been out cleaning the garden a bit well sweeping the drive back up as the heavy rain has finally put paid to our drive I’m amazed it has lasted the last two years. Was good drive back as we headed to Glenrothes so we could come back over the bridge and although it was a rainy start it did improve as day went on, a good couple of days away with some nice views.
I may one day take my bike up there and do a bit of mountain biking around the Loch but it can be a bit busy with dog walkers and joggers but it does look nice. Well back to normal tomorrow 12hr shift in Perth then hopefully on Sunday out for bike ride i will have to get in as much as i can as in three weeks time i have the etap Lochness event which seems to be going ahead so this will be my first event in 2 years so i am hoping for a nice day as it is a beautiful bike run around the Loch but it also has a very big climb so i need to get my ass into gear 😂.

Well good morning and welcome August how time is flying by, work was fine yesterday had a quiet day so today is about fitting in a walk then back to the bike on Tuesday hopefully the two days after that as well as i am of , but today i will be stretching and walking to get myself into a bit better shape for the etap Lochness we have booked a b&b so all system are go and i really need to get myself a bit fitter and get some of weight off i have put on. And so it begins…. #fit
45min walk 2.32miles and some other bits done as well light weights and lots of stretching so that was a good start I’m back at work tomorrow but plan to do long cycle on Tuesday hopefully around 55miles, i feel determined to get a bit of weight off and just eat a bit better yes i know there will be days when i have fish suppers or curries but i just need to keep an eye on the amount i eat every day.
My beer hawk dispenser arrived so i need to set it up so every now and again when i feel like a freezing cold pint i can have one, now i know it sounds daft but this is going to help control the amount i drink and make sure I don’t go over the score as this has been part of the problem I’m still doing what i did when i was younger i binge drink, i like my beer and my whisky but i need to enjoy it more not binge just a pint now and again or a dram mmmm unless i am out but even then just keep it under control I’m 59 not 29 😂. So onto rest of the day wont do much as need some relax time to let body recover as that’s another thing i do is not giving my body recovery time so that’s another change which shall be made today. I have always liked going foe a few beers especially when younger the wknd always started Friday after work I’d be away for few beers with some work colleagues or few mates and brother. Friday night would be foreigners bar then off to the cellar bar which was a rock bar and from there the junction 9 another heavy metal disco this place is now the Malmasion. Cellar bae was full of posters on the wall of bands that had played Dundee Cairdhall likes Deep Purple AC/DC, UFO, even the Beatles amongst a few, we would get there around 8:30 few bears then upstairs to the j9 and that be me until the early hours of the morning i swear you would walk into the j9 and be high as a kite before you even had a beer 😂 it was also part of the Tay Hotel as you will see in the pictures.
All i can say is we had some fun nights here it could be a bit rough at times it was dark inside but the music was great i always got home bit sweaty and very drunk. Saturdays well i will tell you more about that in blog 20. I met a lot of good people here and Forigners bar some i still see and some i have not seen in years, no dress code really just jeans T-shirt trainers and well for me long hair on the floor just playing my air guitar, there was one guy who would stand in one corner of the dance floor and when a certain record or records came on he would walk from one corner to the other giving everything he had man it was just great fun, there was also a girl who would dance to pink floyd and it was like watching a ballet but mainly just rockers and if a fight broke out you just stood aside until it was over then you would get on with your rocking or drinking HA. But these days are long gone mm for the better well no we were so much relaxed and happy in these days well in my honest opinion.
Well the end of another week so ends another blog i can’t believe how well or how much i am enjoying doing this even if no one reads it i shall look back as the years go in. Thank you if you do read and i hope you enjoy parts of this.
